Aaron Damon Porter is a 2026 Cranbrook Painting alumnus and showed his work most recently with an installation at Chore Gallery in August. Aaron moved to Detroit in 2024 after 15 years as a full-time artist in New Orleans, LA. He is a painter and puppeteer, currently building a new body of works that use twin boxsprings as the base for topographical investigations into queer embodiment and trans lived experience.

Stop by Ceramics School for ‘Afternoon Tea in the Kiln Garden’ this Saturday, October 3rd from 2-5pm We’ll enjoy a verity of lovely teas with idiosyncratic vessels, mill about the kiln garden and studio, talk nerdy ceramics things, and appreciate a beautiful fall afternoon. 🙂

Henry James Haver Crissman earned a BFA in Craft from the College for Creative Studies in Detroit, MI in 2012, and a MFA in Ceramics at Alfred University in Alfred, NY in 2015. He and Virginia Torrence co-founded and co-direct Ceramics School LLC, a ceramic-centric community art school and artist residency, where they live and make art in Hamtramck, MI. His multi-faceted community-based art practice is rooted in clay – building on its expressive, vernacular, and communal capacities – and manifested as objects, installations, kiln making and firing, video and performance work, community projects, curation, teaching, facilitation and space making. He has taught as an adjunct professor at the College for Creative Studies, The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Eastern Michigan University, Wayne State University among others, and since 2023 has co-taught the wood fired ceramics courses with Virginia Torrence at Oxbow School of Art.

Patricia Howell is a Detroit mixed-media artist working in abstract realism since 2012. Better known as Trish, she graduated Henry Ford Community College with an associate degree and attended Wayne State University where she majored in Fine Arts. Trish creates vibrant portraits, landscapes, and nature-inspired works using acrylic, oil, watercolor, resin, and texture. Her art is inspired by the beauty of everyday life and the memories that connect people to Detroit, family, and community.

Our Front Yard has been transformed into a Halloween-lover’s delight! Stop by during the daytime for some light Halloween fun or come by after dark when the spook factor is amplified. We hope to have a scavenger hunt set up to encourage folks to linger and interact (please don’t walk in our garden) with our Halloween instillation.

We’re two creatives living under the same roof. Lynn is a Director at the College for Creative Studies managing a program that provides free art and design classes to over 6,000 Detroit area kids a year, has a background in costume design, and makes mixed-media collages to process the world around her. Joe is a ham radio enthusiast who also loves building things and caring for a jungle of plants both indoors and out.

Celebrating the LAUNCH of Scott Beal’s latest poetry collection STEGOSAURUS MOON. FREE Reading with Scott Beal, Tommye Blount and Dom Witten, produced by the Poetics Lab.

Scott Beal is the author of Wait ‘Til You Have Real Problems (Dzanc Books, 2014) as well as the chapbook The Octopus (Gertrude Press, 2016). He directs the Lloyd Scholars for Writing and the Arts program at the University of Michigan and teaches in the Sweetland Center for Writing. He co-hosts the Skazat! monthly online poetry series and co-edits Public School Poetry. Scott’s latest poetry collection, STEGOSAURUS MOON, explores heartbreak, divorce, parenthood and the discovery of new,often unexpected, ways forward.

Tony Hope (b. 1989, Redford, MI – BFA College for Creative Studies, MFA Yale School of Art) is a multi-disciplinary artist living and working in Michigan. Hope’s work has been exhibited across the country and internationally since 2012, with notable exhibitions at: von ammon co (Washington, DC), Ashes/Ashes (New York, NY), Marlborough Gallery (New York, NY), and Jessica Silverman Gallery (San Francisco, CA). Tony Hope is currently represented by von ammon co in Washington, DC.

Phil is a local teacher, storyteller, former camp counselor and Book Suey Community Member. He likes dark chocolate and has two adorable pet hermit crabs named Chefi and Teuvo.

The Convent was originally built in 1929 for the Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth, a primarily Polish order of Catholic nuns serving Transfiguration Church & School. As the number of nuns declined, the building eventually fell into disuse and disrepair. In 2022, it was revitalized and transformed into an art and wellness hub, providing private office and studio space for health and wellness practitioners, artists, and other creatives. It also offers spacious common areas for larger gatherings and events. The Convent was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2019 when the entire Transfiguration campus received historical status.
