Lynn & Joe
Our Front Yard has been transformed into a Halloween-lover’s delight! Stop by during the daytime for some light Halloween fun or come by after dark when the spook factor is amplified. We hope to have a scavenger hunt set up to encourage folks to linger and interact (please don’t walk in our garden) with our Halloween instillation.
We’re two creatives living under the same roof. Lynn is a Director at the College for Creative Studies managing a program that provides free art and design classes to over 6,000 Detroit area kids a year, has a background in costume design, and makes mixed-media collages to process the world around her. Joe is a ham radio enthusiast who also loves building things and caring for a jungle of plants both indoors and out.

Tony Hope
Leveraging his continued reverence for blockbuster body horror, juggalo culture, synthetics, and a proverbial state of youth, Tony Hope presents new work. Our space also happens to be a barbershop Hope himself would frequent during its operating years. Despite showing consistently on both coasts of the US for more than a decade, this is his first solo show in Michigan. The show is accompanied by a zine of the artist’s own design, utilizing self-shot images of the work alongside text and imagery which served as its source material. Tony Hope (b. 1989, Redford, MI – BFA College for Creative Studies, MFA Yale School of Art) is a multi-disciplinary artist living and working in Michigan. Hope’s work has been exhibited across the country and internationally since 2012, with notable exhibitions at: von ammon co (Washington, DC), Ashes/Ashes (New York, NY), Marlborough Gallery (New York, NY), and Jessica Silverman Gallery (San Francisco, CA). Tony Hope is currently represented by von ammon co in Washington, DC.

The Convent
Come visit The Convent during the Hamtramck Neighborhood Arts Festival! Wander through our open studios, meet the artists, explore the space, and see what goes on here. Plus, you can check out some of our available spaces!
The Convent was originally built in 1929 for the Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth, a primarily Polish order of Catholic nuns serving Transfiguration Church & School. As the number of nuns declined, the building eventually fell into disuse and disrepair. In 2022, it was revitalized and transformed into an art and wellness hub, providing private office and studio space for health and wellness practitioners, artists, and other creatives. It also offers spacious common areas for larger gatherings and events. The Convent was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2019 when the entire Transfiguration campus received historical status.

Jonathan Sniezek
See through my perspective of Hamtramck. A place my family has been a part of for more than 100 years. I choose to document day-to-life, the people, and events as I acclimate back to the city my family has since all left. Born on Charest in ‘97, my life began in Hamtramck. My father moved us to a new home in New Baltimore in 2001, being the first of our family to leave. In the next year, my parents would split up and I would spend my weekends in my grandmother’s small apartment on Belmont. In 2021, I moved back to the city on my own, with the goal to document the beauty and culture of the city.

Christopher Street Days held a special place in my heart!” he explains, referring to the European LGBTQ+ celebration that commemorates the Christopher Street Riots (Stonewall). This powerful homage establishes the gallery’s foundation in inclusivity and historical significance. ** -

Michaela Nichelle
Wine of the World is a solo exhibition by Michaela Nichelle that examines how kinship is formed, utilizing both domestic and public archives. Through the examination of Black women’s roles and labor, Nichelle honors the legacies of memory-keeping and the radical fight for preservation and justice she’s inherited. Through jacquard weavings, hand-sewn flags, and performance documentation, Witness Nichelle’s Altar Keeping practice as she boldly answers the question “how y’all kin?” Hatch studio artists will also have open studios during HNAF– explore work from Mike Kelly, Andrew Dall’olmo, Tisch Mikhail Lewis, and more!
Michaela Nichelle is an interdisciplinary artist, archivist, and arts educator whose practice lives at the intersection of Black girlhood studies, memory, and fine arts. Working across domestic installation, food narratives, culturally specific performance, text, and archival practices, she explores Black girlhood as a site of care, remembrance, and communal knowledge. Grounded in homegirling theory, Nichelle approaches artmaking as a heartfelt practice of remembering and honoring herself alongside generations of Black women and girls whose lives, labor, and everyday rituals shape collective histories. She positions herself as an Altar Keeper: a caretaker, historian, and steward of communal memory who tends to the cultural and spiritual practices that sustain Black life. Through this practice, she asks how remembrance can become an act of liberation, imagining the altar as both a physical and conceptual space where Black girlhood is preserved, celebrated, and continually restored.

Zara Teicher
Join Detroit-based musician, composer, and visual artist Zara Teicher for two workshops, one on October 2nd and one on October 3rd, exploring sound as a pathway for play. We’ll experiment, listen deeply, let loose, get silly, improvise, and follow (or maybe break?) the rules of different game-type pieces. In the spirit of folk traditions and drawing from the work of Pauline Oliveros, Fluxus, and others, we’ll connect to each other as a community through sound making as a living social language. We will use our bodies, voices, and every day objects (that are actually instruments in disguise). Participants can attend one or both workshops. Please register for workshops separately on Partiful. The workshops will culminate in a parade in which we’ll play music together as the “What’s Cooking Orchestra!?!” alongside the Hamtramck Neighborhood Arts Fest Monster Parade at 8 p.m. on Saturday night.
*Those attending on Saturday 10/3 should bring a kitchen item to play music on. 6-8pm each night Presented by Detroit Folk School and Play House Laboratories Suggested Donation $20 (Pay what you can)). Register and pre-pay on Partiful. Cash accepted at the door. Michael Copado/Revvytone Modern Primitive Instruments.
Explore how a cigar box, cookie tin, a hunk of wood, string and other junk became the backbone of the music we listen to today through instruments of “junkyard luthier” Michael Copado. I will have an eclectic and eccentric collection of homemade instruments, such as cigar box guitars, basses made out of fence posts and washtubs, canjos, diddleybows, washboards and other things made with items scrounged from the dumpsters and alleys around town for people to examine and try. I’ve invited a few musician friends so there will be informal jams throughout the afternoon.
Since 2017, I have been building and (poorly) playing musical instruments made from cigar boxes, cookie tins, found objects (usually from the alleys and dumpsters around town) and reclaimed wood. Inspired the recent exhibition of my instruments and their historical contribution to the music we listen to today at the Hamtramck Historical Museum, I’ve been exploring lately the instruments that our immigrant ancestors and newer neighbors brought with them to these shores. I have begun to build recreations of some of these instruments along with experiment “modern” instruments based on them. I use everything from primitive hand tools up through modern laser engravers along with all sorts of arts and craft techniques from other hobbies, stolen from youtube such as model railroading, jewelry making, silver soldering and even nail art to build unique one of a kind instruments that can be enjoyed by children and adults alike and by every level of musical skill.
